Mary the Weaver is a family business that has been running for three generations. The craft of traditional hand weaving was first introduced to our family by my father in law. Since then Mary the Weaver has become a well known business both nationally and internationally.
We are a business based on the belief of delivering quality hand weaving cane to ensure you enjoy your furniture for many years to come. Whether it is an antique item or a modern piece of work, we guarantee to offer our best service to repair the cane to our best ability.
Our business has been in operation since 1990. However, the skills and mastery were developed well before then. My father in law wove and repaired wicker cane through the 1940's. His workings included chairs used in cafés and restaurants, and stools used by barbers. After migrating to Australia in 1980, he began to work from home doing small jobs here and there to make ends meet.
After establishing a family of my own, I began to learn the trade from my father in law in 1989. As the years passed on I developed a small clientele and began to expand the business. Starting within New South Wales and eventually developing nationally, Mary the Weaver became a trusted name for our deliverance of quality hand weaving.
With the help of my husband our experience of furniture weaving varied from baby prams, bar stools, chaise-longues, armchairs and even bed-heads.
Seeking more challenge in the world of weaving, I began to educate myself with the art of rush chair weaving. Initially woven with sea grass, these pieces of furniture came in the traditional four diagonal framework. Using self education methods I mastered weaving rush chairs and began developing my business in that area of furniture repair.
With the business expanding, I decided to pass the trait onto my children. Receiving enquiries from Paris, Hong Kong and Australia wide we worked to create the trusted name of Mary the Weaver, delivering quality hand weaving.
